The piece that started it all.
This work began as an acrylic painting that I wasn’t happy with. In an attempt to salvage it, I started gluing magazine clippings directly over the paint. Using magazines to depict a magazine made sense, but it turned out to be more work than I bargained for. From start to finish, it was a four-year art project.
The first thing I did after completing it was fly to Edmonton, armed with the first print for the friend who had given me the idea. We were to meet at the JW Marriott lobby bar, but before he arrived, Wayne Gretzky walked in.
At first, I thought there was no way I was going to bother #99. However, with some solid peer pressure and two shots of tequila, I caved. I went over to introduce myself, and the encounter turned out better than I ever could have imagined.
It was a surreal experience that shot my inspiration and motivation to an all-time high. That happened in Dec 2019. COVID would take hold a few months following and I moved my practice into a proper studio shortly thereafter. Credit the Great One with the assist.
